biota's Crew 2014


Based in Minneapolis, MN, biota is an award-winning landscape design and build firm that works on residential and commercial projects. Our mission is to create innovative designs that invite interaction and inspire the imagination using the highest-quality plants, materials and construction techniques. We strive to share our knowledge and foster an ongoing stewardship to create lasting enjoyment.
Steve Modrow

Steve Modrow: Owner, ASLA

Steve oversees design services at biota. He is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and is the President of the Minnesota chapter. He is also the chair of the Design Network Committee of the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association. Steve received his master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Minnesota after completion of his bachelor’s degree in environmental design.

Jim Saybolt

Jim Saybolt: Owner, Affiliate ASLA, CLP

Jim oversees biota’s operations. He is a MN Licensed General Contractor, MNLA Certified Landscape Professional (CLP) and an affiliate of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He studied at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, the University of Minnesota and attended Harvard Graduate School of Design for their Career Discovery program in landscape architecture. Jim currently serves on the MNLA networking committee and is a MNLA Foundation Trustee.

Elizabeth Wynne

Elizabeth Wynne: Designer, CLP

Elizabeth is a designer here at biota. She holds an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in Landscape Design and Construction. She is a Certified Landscape Professional (CLP) with the Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association

Eric Alward

Eric Alward: Designer, Associate ASLA

Eric is a designer here at biota. He is an Associate of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He completed his bachelor’s degree in fine art and received his master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Minnesota.

Nick Wagner

Nick Wagner: CLP, Manager of Maintenance + Gardening Services

Nick manages our Maintenance and Garden Services. He holds an associate of science degree in environmental landscape management and a bachelor of arts in philosophy. He is a Certified Landscape Professional (CLP) with the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association, and achieved a Permaculture Design Certificate from the Permaculture Institute.

Roger Beck

Roger Beck: Florist

Roger founded and operated an award-winning floral design studio in Minneapolis, Roger Beck Florist. Under Roger’s thoughtful direction, the studio produced events and arrangements. It was open 26 years until Roger sold the property in 2018. Roger then joined his studio with Biota and continues to maintain an impeccable reputation for thoughtful and artful floral arrangements.

Veronica Jacobsen

Veronica Jacobsen: Office Manager + Bookkeeper

Veronica joined the biota team in 2018. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from St. Anselm College, and a background in small business development, nonprofit governance, finance, and accounting.

Installation Foreman

Installation Foreman: Tom Kobayashi, Joe Hafner and Bryan Hardel

Tom Kobayashi
Tom has been in the industry for twenty years, and with biota the past seven. He brings his vast knowledge and experience to the team as well as his dedication to always arrive to work before anyone else.

Joe Hafner
Joe started landscaping summers when he was home from college to keep him outside and active. He has been a force with biota for eight years. When he is not in your yard, you can find Joe camping, canoeing, mountain biking and fishing.

Bryan Hardel
Bryan has been with biota for four years. A geology student by nature, Bryan is our swiss-army knife of employees, versatile and always willing to help out wherever he can.
